Sculpture Peek Activity
Sculpture Peek is a group challenge to reflect on how communication develops and how people perform during teamwork. This exercise is ideal for small groups of 5 to 7 people. However, the activity can be adapted by forming several teams.
This hands-on learning activity will require a large bucket of Lego building blocks or Jenga blocks.
Start by building a model using the Lego blocks and hide it from the group. Then, allow one person to act as the team leader and observe the built model for 10 seconds.
Next, the team leader must relay what they have seen to their teammates to build the free-standing structure based on memory. After about one minute of trying to recreate the model, ask another member to come up for a “sneak peek” before going back to their team and telling them how to recreate the sculpture.
Allow two minutes to pass and ask another member to come over to take another look and return to your team to correct any deviations in the sculpture. Wait a few more minutes for the group to complete the sculpture.
Since this is a memory activity, there are likely differences between the three leaders who observed the construction. As group coordinator it is interesting to observe how the team resolves the differences and difficulties that arise.
Moment of Reflection
- What was the most difficult part of the exercise and why?
- What process did your group use to make decisions?
- How did the three observers resolve the differences?
- What did you notice about the team’s communication during the activity?
- What roles emerged in the group and how did they impact the result?
