Silent Building Project Activity

Silent Building Project is an ideal exercise to train communication and teamwork in a challenging and complex context. This fantastic exercise pushes people to develop creative communication skills and encourages cooperation and collaboration.

People will be tasked with recreating a famous building or site using toothpicks and tape. The problem is that they cannot verbally communicate with each other while building.

Divide the group into teams of six-to-eight people and give each team toothpicks and tape. Show a picture of a famous building or site (i.e., the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower, Machu Picchu) and have each team use toothpicks and tape to recreate it.

Teams are not allowed to talk as they build their building or sculpture. After each team is done, allow everyone to vote on which one looks most like the original.

  • What did you notice about your teamwork process? How does your team make decisions to define how to carry out the construction?
  • What strategies did you adopt to communicate between people in the group?
