The Quote of the Day Exercise

Quote of the day is a simple but powerful opening exercise to promote reflection and the exchange of ideas.

In advance, consider one or more quotes to tell your group that will promote interaction, sharing, and frame your group experience. Invite your group to discuss what the phrase means to them.

When you share interesting and/or engaging quotes, you will do more than just invite your group to reflect. You will set the tone for your forthcoming activity or discussion and help guide people’s focus and attention.

Craft a quote that is related to the purpose of your gathering. Once your group has gathered, pose your quote.

This activity offers opportunities to explore and practice the following social & interpersonal skills:

  • Identifying emotions
  • Linking feelings, values and thoughts
  • Recognising strengths, prejudices and biases
  • Demonstrating self-confidence, honesty and integrity
  • Social awareness
