The Random Words Activity

Random Words is a great energizing and fun activity to inspire collaboration and encourage creativity in your group. In advance, prepare a set of alphabet cards, modelled on the letter tiles of the commercial board game Scrabble.

Gather your group, and randomly distribute one alphabet card to each person. If you have less than thirty people, you may choose to distribute two cards per person.

Form a straight line according to the alphabetical order of the cards so everyone has an idea of what letters are available.

Form small groups that spell out a four-letter word, then (after a few minutes) a five-letter word, and finally a six-letter word, adding that with each new round, everyone must find new group members to complete a word. Invite your group to repeat this challenge several times.

Moment of Reflection
  • What did you notice during the exercise?
  • Did you notice chaos and disorder? At what point in the exercise?
  • What did you feel when the words began to be created? Does the intensity of the chaos go down?
  • Do you have to go through a moment of chaos to create new things?
  • In your daily routine, do you live with chaos or with order? Or with both?
