The Pirate Ship Exercise

The Pirate Ship is an easy but powerful exercise to open a meeting and get participants to reflect on their attitudes or feelings about the team. It allows people to self-explore and reflect on the roles and responsibilities that coexist in the group.

Show participants the image of the ship. If you are running an online meeting you can just share your screen and show the image.

Ask the following question: “Which character in the image best represents you in relation to the team and why?”

Invite each participant to reflect on which person in the picture best represents them in relation to the team. Ask participants to share (for example in the chat) the number of the person who best represents them and explain in a sentence why.

Moment of Reflection
  • Do the characters on the ship have positive and negative aspects? Can the same character have both aspects?
  • When you chose the number of the character you resemble, did you choose it for its positive aspects, negative aspects or both?
  • Was there a number or several of characters that were repeated the most? What conclusion can you draw about the elections?
  • How does it help the team to know what roles coexist in the group?
